A Real Sleeper - Very, Very Nice Camera Oct 10, 2011
By William Bash
"Someone Who Still Cares"
In the world of today's Digital Cameras and Accessories - the terminologies, do's & don'ts, operational capabilities, and options available from within the Camera(s) to the photographer, all can become a bit mind boggling. As a small personal note for this review: I retired this past year, have decided to get back into photography, years ago I used a Canon FTB 35mm Film SLR for capturing many memories. In the past year, I have purchased a simple Digital Point & Shoot for carry around, but now this SONY A55VL is my third DSLR type Camera - to complement a Canon T2i, Nikon D3100 DSLR types. These makes and models may be classified as "entry-level/beginner type DSLRs", however, I am just an amateur who primarily likes to take Landscape & Wildlife Photographs. I am studying and learning daily, and now being retired, they are all that I could afford. I have additional Telephoto Lenses for each, both OEM kit type, and aftermarket. (Footnote:) I utilize a SIGMA (TM) 18-250mm Telephoto with the Canon T2i, and it provides excellent long distance results from a product that is well made, and costs some two hundred dollars less than its Canon (TM) counterpart. Only problem, it now weighs a ton for carrying around in the woods, etc. I wanted something that was fast, light weight, and would give excellent color quality images - hence enter the SONY Alpha SLT-A55V product.
This Camera (as you have probably read already) does not utilize a traditional moving (Reflexing Mirror) - its optical viewing and image sending is via a Translucent Technology. What the user sees goes to the Eyepiece Viewfinder, the LCD Screen, and directly to the CMOS Image Processor - hence no differentiation of what you see vs. what you get!
The Camera is "fast", focuses fast, provides great color reproduction, captures moving objects nicely (such as Ducks taking to flight, or Deer trotting through the woods, or your grandchild throwing a football). The cameras lighter weight & slightly smaller size are wonderful, and the Menu's of selections seen in the Viewfinder or LCD Screen are straight forward for the most part, and easy to use. There are a couple of small drawbacks:
(1) Due to this SLT Type technology, the Camera sure likes to use Battery power (more so than a traditional DSLR) - but the Battery type used is of good quality, and has sensory circuitry built into the Battery itself. Buy an extra battery. (2) The Users Manual loses certain terminology aspects in its conversion to the English language - and could be laid out in a better "flow" type manner - the Manual is a bit convoluted in the way things are presented, needs some improvement.
When SONY bought Minolta and Konica Camera companies - the engineering horsepower of these three Camera giants has truly enabled the consumer to buy state of the art technology, with pricing and quality that are very reasonable for most of us - and certainly to those of us now retired with a fixed income.
Last notation: Amazon's seller Cameta Camera of Long Island, New York has now provided me with this fourth Camera Kit in the past year. As an Amazon seller, they are "top shelf", and I am particularly impressed with their physical packaging of their shipping containers - each has been well/carefully packaged - no damage as a result of the Carrier(s) handling.
SONY Cameras are coming on strong - it is no longer just Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc. You will love the A55V/L.

Awesome Camera Apr 09, 2011
By Sabine Stout
"snow girl"
I have had this camera for about a month now and absolutely love it. My previous camera was a Pentax K10d. The Sony A55 is so nice a light. Takes great panaramas and the pictures are beautiful- great color and wonderful clarity. I can't say enough about the camera. The rest of the kit is great as well. Nice tripod with 10 year warranty, UV lenses are good, bag is nice too. The extra lense is awesome as well. I didn't need the card reader since my laptop has a built in card reader but it's fine, the cleaning kit is basic with the usuall items. I would recommend this kit.

Great Camera Oct 12, 2011
By Mimi1234 This is my first DSLR camera, and I absolutely love it..it is easy to use, right out of the box...I love the scene selections,my photos come out clear and the color is awesome.I would recommend this camera to anyone thinking about DSL...I was scared I wouldn't know how to use it,or that I'd have blurry pictures, but that is not the case...I am a little obsessed with taking pictures now, because they look so good! I did buy an extra battery, and am glad I did....the battery does drain if you use it in scene modes... The seller packaged everything great, and shipping was fast...would buy from them again.

Great Camera Package Aug 25, 2011
By John Ray I've been using this camera for about two months and I continue to learn and improve on my photographic skills. It is fun to use and produces great results. Another great benefit is that I've been able to use all my Minolta Maxxum lenses. Highly recommend this camera for those wishing to move into the digital world of photography from the old school world of film.
AWESOME CAMERA AND AWESOME PACKAGE DEAL!! Mar 01, 2012
By Tia For first look this is a great deal for the money, but it is not just a great deal for the money it is a GREAT camera. I used to work for a photography company many years ago and I got super spoiled (used a Nikon DSLR), from then on I never looked at a camera the same way. It took me a while to make this purchase because I was looking at Nikons and Canons for many years. I had never heard of a Sony Alpha Camera. I looked at the price, avail of accessories that I could and did purchase at the same time, an the reviews from Amazon and multiple other sites reviews.
This camera is perfect for someone that wants a DSLR but doesnt want all the complication that the expensive camera's can give you. I love that it has a panoramic setting that can take a large area and put it in one pic by taking multiple shots and you moving from one side to the other to get the whole scene in the picture, great option for those pic you have to keep telling everyone squeeze together, NO MORE!! My son LOVE the smile detector, OMG, if you knew my son he has one of those odd smiles if you tell him to smile. This camera can detect a small, meduim or large smile and automataclty take the picture so I dont have to tell him to smile he just does it when he is ready and FINALLY I am getting natural smile pictures.
I love that this camera has so many options to add on to it and easy to know settings!! It was super easy to find len's, flash's and a not so expensive remote control to go with it. I made a SUPER LARGE purchase and it was the best purchase I have ever made!!
If you decide to get this camera you WILL NOT be dissapointed!!!
