| | Description | The CS-445 offers a carefully considered balance of performance, price, and practicality. Thanks to its compact size, this versatile audio mini system can be set up virtually anywhere in the home. Driving the system is a combined CD-receiver that handles regular CDs as well as recordable CDs encoded with compressed audio files. Playback options are further expanded by a built-in iPhone/iPod dock that lets you hook up and recharge your device. Naturally, given Onkyo’s enviable track record in home audio, the processing and amplification circuitry are second to none. Completing the system are two precision-crafted bookshelf speakers featuring Onkyo’s proprietary OMF diaphragms. | |

If you know what you're looking for, you're in luck Jan 08, 2011
By Dull Roaring The key to being truly satisfied with this stereo is first knowing what you want from it. If you're looking for a full surround solution, this isn't it. If you're looking for a simple stereo with wall-trembling bass, keep moving. If, however, you're looking for a clean sound to enjoy in a single room, you're in the right product page.
I bought this strictly for music listening; not as part of a home theatre set up. As you know by now, all decent speakers should be allowed a burn-in period before being judged for their merit. And the included speakers on this unit are no exception. That said, though, these sound crisp (not sharp) and deep (not boomy), which fits the receiver's output optimally.
I loved the sound straight away. And after about 10 minutes using the stereo, I was reminded again why Onkyo doesn't run in the same circles as Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, and many of the other disposable consumer electronics manufacturers. It's all better here.
I bought a Polk Audio subwoofer to complete the low frequencies that this one just isn't made to provide, and already I've taken a great compact system and elevated it to a class that should be considered outstanding (especially once I adjusted the Onkyo's tone, increasing the treble to full throttle, and reducing the bass output to about 30%).
I'm looking at a pair of BIC bookshelf speakers to upgrade from the "free" set that came with this stereo, but I want to let these burn-in first and see how badly I want an upgrade. Already, though, this is a very good sounding set up.
A few other noteworthy things:
-subwoofer hookup is stupid simple with the pre-out on the back of the receiver
-though Onkyo has been careful not to make any promises regarding the receiver's compatibility with the new iPhone4, I have one and it plays/operates seamlessly via the built in dock
-the remote is well above par for intuitive layout and reception range
-it would have been nice to have an integrated USB port, and given the growing adoption of this feature on even lesser compacts, its absence is peculiar
All in all, you won't have any buyer's remorse about this stereo as long as your expectations are realistic. That is, the customers most likely to regret this purchase are those who have eaten up the propaganda that bass dBs and watts are the real measurement of sound quality.
The rest of you will enjoy this little powerhouse.

Great little system! Apr 15, 2011
By Janet Periat Love this little baby! Simple, well-built, good sound. Perfect for a smaller room, like a bedroom or office. Of course, I have stereos in every room of my house, practically. Big system in living room, smaller systems in offices and bedrooms. I put this Onkyo system in my kitchen. But for some people, this might work well as their main system. Because it does ROCK! Make sure you get a subwoofer with it, the recommended Polk subwoofer is full of power. I hook up my iPod to the dock and listen to Pandora, and also play CDs. Super easy to hook up. Super easy to use. And it does get loud when you crank it. My kitchen is about 15 feet by 20 and this system is perfect for it. And yes, I put a subwoofer in my kitchen and I recommend you do, too. Makes cooking much more fun!
Buy this system, you won't be disappointed. It's a winner!

Very nice stereo at a great price May 27, 2011

I got this for my mom, who had been looking for a stereo for about two years. She was looking for specific features that are a little hard to find in modern systems. It needed to be a compact shelf system with a timer and sleep function. It needed to be capable of playing cassette tapes or have a line-in that could be connected to a tape player. It needed to have enough volume that she could hear it from different rooms as she moved around her house, and it needed to be able to pick up her favorite FM station which does not have a strong signal. And, lastly, she wanted a unit that could be operated from the front panel, as she doesn't much care for remote controls. This unit mostly fit the bill and was on sale for under $300 at Amazon. It's sound quality and volume are very good, as is it's FM radio reception. Most of the basic functions can be accessed from the front panel (except for the timer and radio tuner--there are pre-set station buttons on the front panel, but they have to be set up using the remote). It has basic treble, bass and balance controls, but no equalizer functions. We connected a Pyle USB tape player to the line-in, and it sounds ok. It is very compact, sits nicely in a small space, seems to be well built and looks very classy. Also, the remote is fairly simple and easy to use. I would actually rate it at about four and a half stars.

Great setup for small rooms/poor audio enthusiasts! Buy it already! Jan 06, 2012
By Derek As a financially-conscious 26 year old jazz/pop musician and audio enthusiast, I was looking for a bookshelf system that would work well in the living room of my apartment and allow me to enjoy quality music from either my iPhone, my inexpensive Sony turntable (connected via stereo RCA cords), or my CDs.
This system accomplishes all three things beautifully for the price. The receiver and speakers all seem to have been built stoutly, and look sharp in my living room. Sound is surprisingly full and rich from the speakers, and if you're not obsessed with dousing your house in bass frequencies they have plenty of punch for smaller-room applications. I have absolutely no need for a subwoofer in my 700 sq ft. apartment; but then again, I'm not blasting the latest hip-hop albums either, so I could see where someone might need one for sustained and heavy bass note reproduction.
Iphone 4 connectivity is fine; the remote that came with the receiver even allows for you to change songs/volume without touching the iPhone!
I am listening to Radiohead's In Rainbows on vinyl right now, and could not be more pleased. If you're on the fence about this system, pick it up; you will love it!
