4Great solution for a sound bar on my plasma TV  Jan 15, 2011 By Scott Smith
I have the same problem so many other people are having. I bought a large plasma TV and and amplified sound bar, but didn't know the TV had only a toslink/fiber optic audio output. For a lot of reasons that are too difficult to explain here, there are huge differences in the level of volume coming out of the TV, depending on the source of the signal. For some recorded programs I have on my media player I get good volume form the TV at 45% volume. For some cable channels I can't get adequate volume even at 100% volume. It was maddening. If my TV had an RCA audio out, or even a headphone jack, like just about every other TV in the world used to, I could fix it. I could have put a small line-level booster on the TV output. But optical outputs are digital. You would have to modify the digital signal to increase the levels, just not practical. This wonderful box is the perfect solution for me. I plugged the optical out from the TV into this box with a toslink cable, then hooked the box to the sound bar with RCA cables. I didn't even need to use the headphone amplifier built into the converter! The converter translates the optical signal and sends it to the speaker bar with the correct line level, and the bar now has plenty of volume. Hooked it up in 30 seconds, didn't even have to read the instructions, and now I am fully enjoying my new TV and sound bar like I should have weeks ago! A few words to those who gave bad reviews: The ad and description for this converter doesn't make it clear, but it will only convert LPCM audio. The technical specifications listed says LPCM, but how many consumers know what that means? Here is the answer... The toslink/optical audio jack on your equipment puts out a digital signal, but not always the same kind of signal. Just because it uses the same optical cable, doesn't mean the signals are compatible. If your TV is outputting Dolby Digital through the fiberoptic jack, the converter can't read it. The good news is that LPCM is available on most devices, you just might have to tell the settings in that device to use LPCM instead some other format. In my case, the TV defaults to LPCM anyway, so I didn't have to change anything. If you are an audiophile and think you are losing some audio quality by using this, I won't argue with you. Go buy a better unit for several hundred dollars more and feel proud. But if you are practical like me, I can't hear any difference in quality between a direct link to my sound bar, or using this converter, except that now the volume is where it should be. I would have given this converter 5 stars if it could have handled any optical signal instead of just LPCM, but other than that it works beautifully!!!

5retro converter  Dec 13, 2010 By Michael P. Japack
It was difficult to determine exactly what it was that we needed. We bought a nice HDTV and just wanted to plug in the stereo headphones in the front headphone jack: but there was no front jack nor any 3mm phone jack anywhere. A call to the manufacturer gave the knowledge of a digital optical output on the back of the TV. After seriuos searches I finally located what sounded like what we needed. The converter was delivered very quickly. Once it was hooked up and plugged in, the converter worked superbly. However, the instructions could have been written a little more clearly for something as simple as hooking up analog stereo headphones.

5The Thing Simply Works  Nov 09, 2011 By John Carlton "actingman"
It does exactly what I wanted it to do. I have a 42 inch flat screen, and it has no analog audio output. Living in an apartment I wanted something for late night audible viewing, as well as careful listening for weak or accented audio. It is powered by a USB connection, and it comes with the necessary A-B USB cable, and an AC adapter to run it off household current. You do have to get an optical cable to connect it to your audio source. So far I have only used it with headphones, and cheap ones at that, and it works fine. It has a volume control on it for the headphones. It also has RCA L R output jacks to hook up to older stereo systems. It solved the problem perfectly and I highly recommend this product.

5Works as promised  Oct 27, 2011 By Michael Williams
This product worked just fine. The only suggestion I would have given to the mfg. was to include a pwr. light: and a signal lock on light would also have been helpful. As another reviewer noted, if it is not working, make sure the t.v. audio control in the menu, is not set on dolby , but pcm. Mine was set to dolby and the device did not work until I remembered the other reviewer's advice. I mainly use this device for wireless headphones. I also ordered a similar cheaper device, that worked well, but the Dac did have more features-a separate volume control, and a phone jack, that some people might make use of.

5Works great!  Aug 11, 2011 By J. Finn "Bookworm"
I messed up the audio jack for my plasma TV, so I bought this thing so I could still listen on my wireless headphones.

At first, I didn't realize it needed to be plugged in and was bummed that it didn't work. Then I realized it came with the little plug thing (it was dark!). Also, it didn't work one at least one of the channels. I put it to channel 1, and voila... sound! It's a very light and cheap-feeling box, but who cares if it works.

My ONLY wish for it is for the cord to be longer and not be a USB plug. It BARELY reaches the plug behind the TV, and just sort of hangs along the back of the TV stand. Because it's a USB input, it comes out of the unit very easily.

Other than that, I couldn't ask for better.
