Much better archos...you're almost there Sep 02, 2010
By Ashton T. S. I previously owned the 605 WiFi and the Vision 3. This is a huge step up. PROS: great sound, excellent video playback, very responsive screen (especially for a resistive touch), G-Sensor and Accelerometer works great, Browser is awesome, games run great, etc. Now I updated to the newest firmware only to find that youtube has not been fixed. But here's the thing...I used a hack to install marketplace and now Youtube works great. Strange?
CONS: proprietary plugs, too many accessories that you have to buy to get full experience, charge time is kind of extreme, does not come with marketplace. it has their own version. gets lots of fingerprints!
They almost messed this one up. they are so close i can taste it. Every year they release a amazing play on paper...but when you use it...you find that certain features may or may not work. or work half a**. This is very close. In october they will be releasing ever better players that include so much more including built in camera :-). It's not bad...i still prefer it over the iPod touch. especially since it will sync with nearly any player. not just itunes. works with Winamp and Windows Media player. Another cool thing is that if you have album art...it will import it. very cool. There are two versions of the Archos 5. one with android and one without. It was definitely a good idea to go WITH android. It's almost impossible to screw up android. Having owned the iPod Touch, iPhone, Archos 605, and more....I can honestly say...this one isn't bad. especially for the price. Wish it had more space though. 16gb isn't enough for me. but hey...it comes with the SD slot too so you can add up to 32gb. awesome!

Not an iPad killer Sep 24, 2010
By Charles C. Tucker
"Yet a beginner"
One of the hopes I had held for this tablet was something to allow me to read Kindle format stories. There is an Android app for Kindle but it requires a certain level of the Android OS which this tablet has apparently not been upgraded to.
Instead of looking for apps in the Android Market you are left going to a less well known site with much less selection.
This model WILL run a basic wireless connection and it will also run an "office" type software. I have not tried out all the features, such as GPS.
Since it uses flash memory it tends to have a relatively long run life. I would imagine the larger versions with a rotating hard drive would not be able to say the same thing.
While it's doing some of the things I want to do with it I am not returning it but I'll be looking for a chance to get one of the Samsung Galaxy Tabs when they come out.

The Archos Player You Need To Know About Jun 12, 2010
By Zabeatta

As the owner of an Archos 605WIFI 80G and a 605wifi 4g players.I am very happy with them but I picked up a new phone,a Droid. The Droid run on the Android OS just like the Archos 5 IT.When I first saw the Archos 5 IT on Amazon I only saw the 32,160 and 500gb model, not the 8 or the 16. I love my 80gig 605 but wanted to get away from moving hard drive.I also wanted the see the Android OS on a bigger screen pmp and my TV set.I picked up a player used and could not be happier. This is a great way to learn about Android and all the great apps in the Android market place for download.I wont say it's better than the Ipod, I touch or the pad,you can make that call. For me I just went a few steps up from my 605(which are still great). With the A5IT I get very fast internet, gps, and a great mp3 player.16 gigs and up to 32 on a sd card is more than enough for my music, videos and ebooks. My pc and my laptop both get a rest since I got this thing. I work on almost any kind of file from anywhere in the house(the wifi on this is great).I have not picked up the dvr station yet because I have 2 for my 605 player. All the tv shows, videos and movies I recorded with the 605 look great on the A5IT.If this is your first Archos player I SAY YOU NEED TO PICK UP THE DVR. Archos for my money is the best at video on any pmp.(that's just for me). Before you buy, do some research ,go to the Archos forum. C net and others ,in other words check it out first.Have I had any problem with this player, yes. Was Archos able to help , yes and no. What I'v found with my Archos player you need not be alone with any problem. The forum is a good place for answers and help, people just like you doing what you do with the player. With any product you might get a bad one now and then, and when you do send it back. I hear a lot of bad things about Archos products and customer service, this has not been my experience. Amazon is a good place to start there good people(I THINK...LOL).PICK IT UP!!!!Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (80 GB)Archos 5 Internet Tablet - Web tablet - Android - ROM: 16 GB - 4.8" color TFT ( 800 x 480 ) - Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi - GPS

Great as a "puzzle" for techies, not great as a fully functional tablet Sep 26, 2010
By Eugene Archos 5 is a beautiful piece of technology at a bargain price, but it is not a functional tablet. The right way to think about it is to view it as a game or puzzle, which will give you tens or even hundreds of hours of enjoyment as you work arounds its bugs, install patches, figure out the right settings, and eventually enable multiple advanced features, one at a time. If you are a good techie, most features will work in the end. If you enjoy tinkering with experimental technologies and get a sense of accomplishment when you make them work, this device is a good investment. But if you want something that works out of the box, it is not for you. In this case, you may be better off buying Dell Streak, which is is far more expensive (about $550, or $300 with a wireless contract), but works right away.

Outstanding Device! Aug 22, 2010
By Dustin M. Kirchner

I just bought this item, and it arrived yesterday. I have had a chance to play with it a little while now, and I am very happy with it. It of course has some downsides... nothing I see worth mentioning. I am disappointed that my unit arrived with a dead pixel. The product has a very nice touchscreen, very responsive, and easy to use, but it is also a fingerprint magnet! Once I get the pixel problem fixed, I will be very happy. I also love Google Android, it has great potential against Apple. Unless something huge happens, I will never buy an Apple product, I do not like Apples business practices.
